Etihad Airways has won a prestigious award from the aviation industry, it has emerged.

The carrier was given the accolade of Airline of the Year at the 2008 Aviation Business Awards, which was held in Abu Dhabi.

James Hogan, chief executive of Etihad, said 2008 has been especially busy for the airline.

"International recognition such as this award confirms our position as an accomplished player on the global aviation map," he added.

Other winners included Airport of the Year for Dubai International, Inflight Services of the Year for Qatar Airways and Training Academy of the Year for Emirates Aviation College.

In September, Etihad told the American media that it intends to carry 25 million passengers a year by 2020, as well as doubling the number of cities it serves to 100.

Etihad - Arabic for united - was established in 2003 and offers services to 48 destinations, including 17 a week from London Heathrow.
