Anyone interested in alternative events and who is going on holidays to Dubai for Christmas week may just be in luck.

Something that sounds a lot like Pop Idol - but for camels - is taking place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and promises to be unlike anything you may have seen before.

According to the Khaleej Times, the Camel Festival is to kick off on December 23rd and will see over 30,000 camels compete in their own beauty pageant spanning 13 days.

Although it was not revealed what they will be judged on - longest eyelashes? Biggest hump? - Salem Ebrahim Al Mazrouei, the organiser of the festival, said that there are plenty of competitors.

"Every day we are registering around 600 to 700 camels and we have to extend the registration deadline by one more day, in order to cope with all the arrivals," he commented.

Cash and other prizes will be given away to the owner of the winning camel.

According to the Gulf Today, there are approximately 375,000 camels in the UAE.
