Emirates and Virgin scoop top travel awardsInternational carriers Emirates and Virgin Atlantic were among the winners at a prestigious travel awards show this week.

The former was named the best airline flying to the Middle East and Asia, Africa and Australasia, beating competitors including Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand at the Globe Travel Awards in London.

Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic won favourite airline in the consumer section, as voted for by readers of Travel Weekly.

Hundreds of companies were shortlisted down to only 40 after the initial votes were cast in September last year.

"A Globe Travel Award really sets companies apart from their competition," said Simon Ferguson, one of the ceremony's organisers.

Last month, Virgin also announced that it is to reduce its fuel surcharges after sustained falls in the price of crude oil, with fares cut by up to £70 on a return flight, depending on the class and the destination.

Emirates recently brought in new double-decker A380 aircraft to operate flights to Dubai from London Heathrow.
