More people opted for holidays in Dubai in December

More people are taking holidays to Dubai, new figures from the city's airport suggest.

According to statistics released by Airports Council International and cited by Vista Dubai, the emirate's airport was the only one of the world's top hubs to have seen an increase in passenger numbers during December 2008, with the others all posting declines.

Dubai saw an overall increase of five per cent, the organisation said.

This could be due to publicity surrounding the destination's affordability - in December, Ian Scott of Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing pointed out that a number of less pricey hotels have opened there recently, including a Premier Inn, three Holiday Inns and two Ibis hotels.

Dubai also offers discounted leading brands and tax-free shopping malls for people looking for a spot of retail therapy - Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell have both been spotted in the city recently, perhaps to take advantage of this.
