Holidays to Dubai could get even more popular following the news that the city has received a prestigious award.

Demonstrating its appeal to people travelling for both business and pleasure, Dubai was named best destination for the Middle East and Africa at the recent Irish Travel Trade News Awards.

Ian Scott, spokeperson for the emirate's marketing organisation, said he was thrilled that it is held so highly in the travel industry's esteem.

He added that new developments in Dubai are likely to be announced in the coming months.

Yesterday (February 5th), it was announced by Airports Council International that Dubai's airport was the only one in the world's top ten to have seen an increase in passenger numbers in December last year.

This could have been due to its increasing popularity with celebrities, or a desire to see new hotels such as Atlantis, the Palm, which opened officially in November 2008.
