Dubai 'offers more than just glamour'

People should not be put off going on holidays to Dubai because they feel it is simply a city full of glitz and glamour, one expert has said.

People should not be put off going on holidays to Dubai because they feel it is simply a city full of glitz and glamour, one expert has said.

DK Eyewitness author Lara Dunston said that while it is undoubtedly popular with celebrities for its opulence, it also has plenty to offer families, backpackers and other travellers.

"The media has always liked to write about Dubai as a playground for the rich. However, there is so much more to Dubai than the glitzy side," she commented.

Ms Dunston said the city state also has a rich cultural heritage thanks to its neighbouring emirates, as well as a fascinating range of Bedouin traditions from its Islam faith.

According to a press release from Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, the city was recently voted best destination for Middle East and Africa at the Irish Travel Trade News Awards.

Nell McAndrew is one celebrity fan of the city, telling the Daily Mail last month that she finds it "endlessly fascinating".
