Use debit cards sparingly abroad, travellers toldAnyone going on an overseas trip soon - potentially including those on holidays to Dubai - has been advised to think about how much they will be using their debit cards in order to avoid steep charges.

This was the recommendation of Andrew Hagger from Moneynet.co.uk, who said that even though they are free to use in Britain, charges of up to 2.99 per cent may be applied abroad.

Not only this, but there may be a transaction fee of as much as £5 on each purchase, which could mount up over the course of a few days.

"With sterling taking a hammering … in the last 12 months, your summer holiday is going to seem expensive enough as it is without having to shell out a packet on debit card charges too," Mr Hagger pointed out.

People going on holiday soon may wish to purchase currency online and load it up onto a pre-paid card such as those from FairFX in order to monitor spending and avoid problems like loss and theft.Meet the editors...
