Before digging out your passport for a cheap holiday in India or Thailand, Brits should think twice about how their behaviour may influence the opinions of locals.

This is the viewpoint of travel guide publisher Lonely Planet, which has advised Brits that what they may think is harmless behaviour on holiday may have a deeper impact.

Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, stated: "Your behaviour can have an enormous impact on the perception of your country."

He said that those thinking of going on holiday should seek as much information as possible by searching online, asking other travellers and heeding the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Mr Hall added that "the more you find out about places, the more you will get out of it".
