Dubai is a favourite of British and Irish travellersThe majority of travellers visiting Dubai are from the UK and Ireland, which suggests that they cannot get enough of the location's sun, beaches and stunning views.

This is according to Ian Scott, director at the Dubai department of Tourism and commerce marketing, who said the organisation is "incredibly confident" that the region's popularity will continue on its current upward trend next year.

Mr Scott points out that the area turned itself around quickly in response to the economic downturn and has saw 97 per cent beach hotel occupancy in August 2009.

He added: "The UK and Ireland represents 10.6 per cent of global visitors, so it makes [them] number one. There's nowhere else in Europe which is really close in numbers and in the top four or five."

Some high-profile Britons who have confessed to being fond of taking holidays in Dubai include long-standing TV presenter Bruce Forsyth and cricket star Andrew Flintoff.
