The Burj Khalifa will help put Dubai on the mapThe opening of Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest tower, will help make the city stand out in the region, one travel expert has said.

Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall commented that Dubai has built a reputation as a destination for "outlandish things".

"You look at the Burj Dubai, it fits quite nicely to that plan - it's brash and it's out there and it's in your face," he said.

Mr Hall added that laying claim to the tallest building in the world can help put a city "on the map" and cited the example of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur which have attracted droves of tourists.

The observation deck in the tower sits on the 124th floor, making it the highest in the world.

Burj Dubai, which opened to the public on January 5th, now holds three records for its height to the tip, height to the architectural top and height to the highest occupied floor.
