Dubai Metro system is celebrating its anniversary and a successful 12 months of service.

Gulf News reports local residents and holidaymakers have been impressed by the new metro system, which has helped to improve journey times for many people.

Eleanor Catubay, a housekeeper based in Dubai, also explained that the efficient transport link offers good value.

"With the Metro when I go from Ibn Battuta to the Mall of the Emirates it only costs half the cost of going by bus."

She added: "It is a nice ride because there's no hassle involved."

Other positive points include the cleanliness of the trains and the helpful staff at the terminals. However, there have been some concerns from passengers about the lack of on-train staff and overcrowding at peak times such as rush hour.

According to DubaiMetro.eu, the daily passenger levels on the system increased from 54,683 passengers in October 2009 to 116,340 in June 2010.
