Dubai sees surge in tourist spendingDubai has seen an increase in the spending levels of tourists, according to a new report.

Gulf News claims that the promotions linked to this year's Dubai Shopping Festival have encouraged visitors to the United Arab Emirates state to spend on a whole host of products and services.

In particular, those taking flights to Dubai have been tempted to purchase consumer electronics, gold and jewellery and fashion goods. There has also been an increase in spending on local food and drink, with the region's malls and high-street retailers reporting improving sale figures.

Other benefits for Dubai include an increase in the performance of the local hospitality sector, with forecasts suggesting that results for the first three months of the year could be at their highest level for three years.

"We saw tourists who were a little bit cautious in the last year - like the Russians - are now getting back in good numbers," said Damien Vernet, Louis Vuitton's general manager for the Middle East and Africa.

He added: "The Chinese New Year is beginning to have a good effect and these are just two reasons why we have had a strong start to the year in the region."

The current Dubai Shopping Festival will continue to February 20th.
