Dubai is continuing to grow as a major holiday destination, claims the country's tourism department.

According to the department of tourism & commerce marketing (DTCM), the state has seen a rise in hotel rooms and this has helped to boost the region's international profile in countires such as Australia.

Last year, Dubai's accommodation levels increased to 82,000 rooms - a mix of three, four and five-star rooms and suites. While the number of people taking flights to Dubai from Australia increased by 5.9 per cent in 2010.

Saleh Mohammed Al Geziry, DTCM director overseas promotions and inward missions, told e-travel Blackboard: "Airlines are also adding more capacity to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha providing more frequencies and choice to the consumer."

He added that Emirates Airline operates 63 weekly flights between Australia and Dubai and 28 flights per week between New Zealand and Dubai.
