Dubai to witness lunar eclipse this summerVisitors catching flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi or any other Gulf destination this summer have been advised to watch the skies as a rare natural phenomenon is due to take place.

This June a full lunar eclipse will happen, according to a Saudi astronomy expert, offering visitors to the region a once in a lifetime experience, Emirates 24|7 reported.

An eclipse like this is not expected to happen again in the next 65 years, Majid Abu Zahra, head of the Saudi astronomy association said.

He added that the last time the Gulf region saw an eclipse of this type was 40 years ago, and this year's lunar event is expected to be one of the "most unique and darkest" in history.

A total lunar eclipse happens when a full moon passes through the earth's shadow, resulting in a striking red colouration, which is due to light refracting through our atmosphere.
