Ramadan coming up in DubaiAnyone taking cheap flights to Dubai in August will be able to witness a centuries-old tradition, as Muslims in the country observe Ramadan.

The Islamic occasion is due to run from August 1st to August 29th, during which time believers are not permitted to eat or drink during daylight hours.

While travellers are not forced to do the same, it is respectful not to consume anything in front of others who are fasting, instead having meals behind closed doors.

As Ramadan is a testing time for Muslims, the festival of breaking the fast at the end of the month is a wild celebration that sees everyone joining in the fun.

According to the Qur'an, Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which differs significantly from the conventional Western system, as the year is 11 to 12 days shorter.

People fast during the month as it is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
