Dubai sees increase in duty free sales Travellers on cheap flights to Dubai could be planning to follow the lead of holidaymakers before them and stock up on duty free products at the airport.

The international hub in the emirate has reported a rise in sale of the tax free products, with sales reaching 3.78 billion United Arab Emirates dirhams (£658 million) in the year to the end of September 2011.

Representing a 16.4 per cent rise in sales on the same period of 2010, the figures put the total revenue taken from duty free sales at the airport on track to hit around 5.3 billion dirhams by the end of the year.

Perfume remained the highest-selling product, although rose gold, a speciality of the region, also performed well with a 24 per cent increase.

The high amount of sales may not be too much of a surprise, as the airport reported it had seen four million people pass through on cheap flights to Dubai during the month of August alone.
