The streetlights in Abu Dhabi are to be more environmentally friendly as new bulbs are fitted.

Abu Dhabi has eco-friend streetlights installed

People taking flights to Abu Dhabi could be interested to know the streetlights in the emirate have become a little bit greener.

The authorities in the state have announced they have been fitting existing lamps with power saving LED bulbs.

The step was no simple feat, as 600,000 fittings had to be replaced by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi, with the work predicted to take around six years to complete.

However, the move will also help to cut the energy bills for the authority, as it is estimated the step will save around 500 million United Arab Emirates Dirhams (£89 million) in energy costs over the next 20 years.

In addition, it will help to reduce carbon dioxide emission by more than 80 per cent.

Visitors taking flights to Abu Dhabi recently may have attended the Volvo Ocean Race, which saw a 100-year-old Irish boat being given a special role on the event's Irish Day.
