Abu Dhabi sees increase in passenger numbers The number of people taking flights to Abu Dhabi recently has seen a strong increase, according to new statistics from the state's airport authority.

According to the latest figures released by the Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), there had been a 13.9 per cent increase in passenger numbers during 2011.

In total, 12.4 million people passed through the airport.

"The continuous increase of Abu Dhabi international airport’s passenger traffic shows a true reflection of the growth that the emirate is witnessing in trade, industry and tourism," said ADAC's chief executive officer James Bennett.

This increase was noted in part to be down to an increase in the number of leading airlines which have now started flying to the emirate, including Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia.

Some people taking flights to Abu Dhabi in the coming days could be planning to attend the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, which will see around 120 of the world's biggest players competing.
