Egypt could become a key destination this year as Brits take advantage of currency fluctuations, claims new research.

The Post Office Travel Money survey has revealed that sterling has strengthened against the Egyptian pound and this could lead to more people taking flights to Egypt in 2011.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, explained: "Egypt has been the outstanding mid-haul holiday success of recent years, with currency sales up five per cent last year and 110 per cent since 2005."

She added that the Egyptian pound is one of the few long-haul destination currencies to weaken so it will appeal significant to those holidaymakers looking for bargain vacations.

Another reason there could be an increase in flights to Egypt is that the country remains in a low band for air passenger duty so it is possible to search out cheap flights to the region.

Cairo International Airport recently reported a surge in traffic during 2010 with a record 16.1 million passengers - an increase of 12.2 per cent compared to the previous year.
