The Indian carrier sent an additional service to bring travellers back to Mumbai.

Air India operating rescue flights to Cairo

Air India has sent an additional flight to Cairo in order to bring back stranded passengers to Mumbai.

The Indian carrier operated an extra Boeing 747-400 yesterday (Wednesday, February 2nd) and the political situation in the north African nation remained tense.

For more than a week, anti-government protestors have been calling for Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak to step down.

In recent days, however, pro-Mubarak factions have joined in the demonstrations, which have led to deadly clashes in Cairo.

After the latest developments, Air India sent out an additional service to the Egyptian capital at 14:40 (local time in Mumbai). It was expected to land this morning at 4:00.

"Considering the ground realities and taking a humane view, Air India will also be bringing passengers who give an undertaking to pay the airfare on their arrival in India," the carrier said in a statement.

"The fare for the journey has been kept at the same level, as the previous flights, which would enable Air India only to recover its costs."
