Lufthansa announces use of biofuelsPeople taking cheap flights to Egypt on Lufthansa could soon be propelled through the air with the aid of biofuels, after the airline announced that it has started using the energy source on domestic trips in Germany.

As part of a long-term test, the route between Hamburg and Frankfurt will see one of the plane's engines run on biofuels.

Over the six-month trial, about 1,500 tonnes of carbon emissions are expected to be saved, with Lufthansa chairman and chief executive Christoph Franz highlighting the significance of this by noting that fossil fuel materials are finite.

"Lufthansa is the first airline worldwide to use biofuel in scheduled daily flight operations. We are thus continuing to steadily implement our proven and successful strategy for sustainability," he added.

This month, the carrier announced that it dealt with 50.2 million passengers in the first half of 2011, representing a 10.1 per cent growth year on year.
