Lufthansa could sell BMI British Midland

International airline Lufthansa has stepped up its effort to offload BMI British Midland.

Lufthansa has hired investment bank Morgan Stanley and has appointed a new chairman to oversee a restructure of the firm.

Vagn Ove Sorensen will take over as BMI chairman at the end of this week (Friday, September 16th).

He is moving from Lufthansa's subsidiary Austrian Airlines.

The overhaul and potential sale could have a major impact on the cost of BMI's cheap flights to Egypt.

BMI, which accounts for 11 per cent of flights at Heathrow airport, has been struggling to turn a profit - however, some analysts believe a buyer may be difficult to find.

Recently, Lufthansa announced that its domestic flights are now more environmentally friendly than ever before as the company is using biofuels in many of its aircraft.

The airline began its long-term test of the new sustainable fuel on its Hamburg to Frankfurt route. In six months alone, some 1,500 tonnes of carbon emissions are expected to be saved.
