With the summer holiday season upon us, a financial services provider has offered travellers some tips on how best to stay safe on a foreign holiday.

With the summer holiday season upon us, a financial services provider has offered travellers some tips on how best to stay safe on a foreign holiday.

According to American Express, one in six people have been a victim of theft while abroad, including having wallets or vital documents stolen.

Consequently, the organisation states, holidaymakers should follow some simple rules to ensure their holiday is not spoilt by crime.

The checklist includes photocopying all important documents and emailing a copy to your own account in case they get lost.

In addition, the company also recommends reading the guidebook to ensure knowledge of the destination, as well as being sure to take the same precautions you would at home, including not walking home alone.

Kirstie Bayley, vice-president of American Express travellers cheques, said: "A theft or break-in can ruin the perfect holiday. The last thing people want when they are on holiday is to worry about the safety of their money and belongings."

People heading out on holidays to India are advised to get to know and respect local customs, including avoiding conversing in loud tones that may be misconstrued as aggressive.
