Britons 'packing food, not clothes'

Britons packing food, not clothesA growing number of holidaymakers are choosing to take items of food in their suitcases for fear of upset stomachs or foreign food in general, it has been discovered.

According to a study carried out by Halifax Travel Insurance, some 20 per cent of travellers have taken products such as tea bags, baked beans and Marmite with them.

Other popular items included ketchup, beer and corn flakes.

Vicky Watson, a spokesperson for Halifax, said that the desire to cram food into suitcases is mostly due to apprehension of what might be found at the destination.

"Brits have become increasingly adventurous in recent years when it comes to eating out on their own doorstep. But for some reason, that attitude disappears completely for many when they head abroad.

"'Tuck Shop Tourists' are the type who fill their suitcases with tins of beans and packets of soup, biscuits and corn flakes, rather than go all out to sample the local delicacies," she remarked.

However, Ms Watson added, holidaymakers could get over their fear of the unknown by eating at popular local restaurants as well as asking other tourists for recommendations.

Earlier this month, a spokesperson from NHS Direct said Britons on holiday should avoid drinks with ice, food cooked on the streets and uncooked, unpeeled fruit and vegetables, which may be relevant advice for those heading on holidays to India.Meet the editors...
