A photograph of Dame Helen Mirren in a bikini has sparked a media frenzy as women speak out to admire her beach confidence.

The Oscar-winning actress, who famously played the Queen in a recent film, was pictured wearing a red two-piece bikini as she clambered around rock pools on holiday with her husband.

She was also found to be sporting a figure that has made many women half her age envious.

Joan Smith, writing for the Telegraph, said that more older women should follow her example and be confident on the beach this summer.

"It's not surprising that so many women give up, dreading beach holidays and gravitating towards swimsuits.

"Then Mirren comes along, challenging the misogynistic message of a youth-obsessed culture. She's happy to head for the beach with no make-up and a body that isn't perfect but pretty damned good for her age," she commented.

Anyone determined to follow Dame Helen's confident lead could consider booking cheap holidays to Goa, which Bollywood actress Esha Deol recommended as "one of the best spots India has to offer" in terms of beaches.
