A growing number of people are choosing to hold their weddings abroad in a bid to beat the increasing costs associated with getting married in this country.

Wedding planning site marryabroad.co.uk said it has received more enquiries about the logistics of getting married in a foreign country in recent months thanks to the savings available.

"More couples are deciding that a wedding abroad is a cheaper option in the current climate and we are receiving more enquiries from couples who have already been on holiday and have decided to get married in their holiday destination," said the website's Charlotte Hand.

The site claims that couples choosing to marry abroad spend approximately £6,000 on their wedding, compared to around £20,000 in Britain.

Anyone booking flights to India in order to get married is advised by the British High Commission that the groom must be 21 years old, while the would-be bride must have reached the age of 18.
