Professionals travelling on business to India are to be given lessons in the country's culture, it has emerged.

Professionals travelling on business to India are to be given lessons in the country's culture, it has emerged.

As part of a scheme to be introduced by the UK India Business Council (UKIBC), the businesspeople will receive tips on how to address people in meetings and how to avoid making cultural gaffes.

These will include not using first names, not standing with hands on hips and not opening gifts before the giver has left the room.

UKIBC chief executive Sharon Bamford said that the lessons, which are to be held in London prior to people heading on flights to India, will be beneficial.

"Integral to doing business in India is an understanding of its religions, politics and etiquette. Business in India is all about trust. If you make a wrong move culturally you can throw away your chances," she commented.

Earlier this month, a spokesperson for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said that anyone travelling abroad for any length of time should take the opportunity to learn the language of their destination.Meet the editors...
