Backpackers opting for shorter tripsWhile more people are planning to take a backpacking holiday, fewer than ever say they will stay abroad for a full year, a survey has found.

A poll on social networking site Bebo found that only 14 per cent will go away for 12 months, with most expecting to stay for six months.

This is due to many people having financial worries, potentially including those who need to save up for university afterwards.

According to the Associated Press, the average amount spent on a backpacking holiday such as a gap year is now around £4,000.

Meanwhile, the American Chronicle suggests that people wanting to go on a backpacking trip should book flights to Goa.

It comments that the beaches, forests, climate and people are ideal for those seeking to explore another culture.

"Goa offers a wide range of options when it comes to accommodation for the backpackers. [It] has many village cottages and beach-side huts that are let out by the locals at very cheap rates," the article adds.
