New system to maximise fuel efficiency for Air India

As jet fuel becomes more expensive in the current economic climate, Air India is to implement a system which should help it to save money.

A computerised flight planning system will be used to build a fuel-efficient route, taking into account outside factors such as altitude, weight and weather, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The new planner was recommended by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) following an efficiency review by the organisation.

"[It] will … suggest best routes, weather alerts and even tell you from where to lift the fuel," said an IATA spokesperson.

The system could help Air India save six per cent of its fuel budget, or around £99 million a year.

Air India is the national airline of India and operates flights to Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore among other destinations.

It is now the second largest carrier in the country after Jet Airways and is followed in third place by Kingfisher Airlines.
