People in the UK are delaying their honeymoon so that they can save up and make it the trip of a lifetime, it has been reported.

According to a survey by esure, 22 per cent of couples delay their honeymoon proper for up to a year after the wedding, but they do opt for a short break or 'mini-moon' to tide them over in the meantime.

Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, said: "There are clearly a lot of newlyweds wanting to use their honeymoon as the ultimate break away before they can truly settle down to married life."

Some 17 per cent said they could not afford their desired honeymoon straight after paying for an expensive wedding

Anyone looking to save money on their actual wedding could consider getting married abroad.

Combining weddings with holidays to India is a popular choice among Brits, but they are advised by the British High Commission that couples should be resident in the district chosen for not less than thirty days immediately preceding the date on which the notice of intended marriage is given.
