Travellers on flights to India and other south Asian destinations are being encouraged to decrease the weight of their luggage by weighing it before they leave home.

Cutting baggage weights could save you money

Travellers on flights to India and other south Asian destinations are being encouraged to decrease the weight of their luggage by weighing it before they leave home.

The union Unite wants holidaymakers to cut their baggage weight to 23kg each and is promoting this through a campaign called 'Lighten Up' which starts at Heathrow and Manchester airports today (November 10th).

Unite says that by reducing weights by even a few kilograms, passengers could avoid having to pay costly excess baggage charges at airport check-in desks, as well as contributing to making air travel more green.

"Last minute charges levied at the departure gate for excess baggage can hit cash-conscious holidaymakers hard. 'Lighten up'. Spend your money abroad, not getting there," commented Unite national officer Steve Turner.

Virgin Atlantic was found to be among the most generous in terms of baggage allowances in a survey carried out by the Co-operative recently.Meet the editors...
