More people than ever are opting for holidays to India, new figures have shown.

More people than ever are opting for holidays to India, new figures have shown.

According to India Tourism, the number of visitors heading to the country from overseas increased from 2.73 million in 2003 to 5.07 million in 2007.

In addition, tourist numbers for the first nine months of 2008 were found to be up by more than ten per cent on last year.

Leena Nandan, joint secretary of the government of India's ministry of tourism, said: "[Tourism] is not likely to be completely stopped by the turbulence that is shaking the world economy; overall, there is every reason for the Indian tourism industry to be optimistic."

Anyone going on holidays to India for the first time may wish to consider the popular tourist resort of Goa.

Conde Nast recommends that anyone considering booking holidays to Goa does so in time for the November to March season, since these months are cooler than the high season, which can be humid.
