Christmas week will see 3m Brits jet offAround three million people are to jet off on holiday over the Christmas and new year period, new research from the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has found.

The firm discovered that traditional holiday destinations such as Tenerife and Turkey are popular, but that many are also set to take holidays in Dubai.

This could be due to large numbers of people visiting family and friends who have relocated there.

Also, despite the credit crunch, the number going abroad was roughly the same as last year.

Justin Fleming, Abta president, said that people do see Christmas as a time to catch up with loved ones, rather than as a jaunt in the sun.

"They provide a valuable time to unwind and spend quality time with family," he commented.

The news tallies with recent research from Kayak.co.uk, which found that a large number of Britons will jet off on December 22nd, the first chance they get after they have finished work for the year.
