People on holidays to India at the end of January may be lucky enough to witness a spectacular festival which marks the country's independence from Britain.

Held every year on January 26th, the event sees the whole of India united in celebration, with parades, folk dancing and a spectacular air force flypast in New Delhi.

Although independence officially occurred in August 1959, the Constituent Assembly of India came into force on 26 January 1950, hence the celebrations this month.

"The patriotic fervour of the Indian people on this day brings the whole country together. Regional identity takes a backseat and what matters most is the universal appeal of unity and brotherhood projected by all Indians," Festivals of India attests.

Also occurring in India this month is Bhogi Pongal, which is the celebration of the harvest in the southern region of Tamil Nadu and lasts for four days from January 15th.
