Holidays to India increasing due to Slumdog filmHolidays to Mumbai are increasing in popularity thanks to the new film Slumdog Millionaire.

This is according to Nigel Richardson of the Telegraph, who writes that a number of tours have sprung up around Mumbai since the film's release for people who want to see the scenery and people depicted on screen.

The film tells the story of a boy who lives in a slum and goes on to become a millionaire thanks to a television quiz show. Mr Richardson states that foreign visitors enjoy visiting and being guided around the shanty towns.

Not only this, but such trips can also benefit the local residents, since 80 per cent of the profits generated from tours are donated to local charities.

Having been on a tour himself, the travel writer said he was pleased to see people going about their everyday lives.

"Paint tins were being returned to gleaming perfection, while scraps of trashed plastic were converted into pristine pellets and twisted aluminium was returned to ingots," he commented.

Mumbai is the second most populous city in the world.
