A holiday to India this February could be ideal for people who like to experience different cultures and religious festivals.

The town of Madurai will hold its annual Float Festival next month to coincide with the full moon.

Lasting several days, the event will see Mariamman Teppakulam Tank transformed by flickering lanterns and flowers as jewelled images of Indian gods are paraded in and floated on a raft to the centre of the water.

People come from miles around to witness that spectacle, with devotees dressing in brightly-coloured clothes and waiting on all four sides of the tank to see it as close up as they can.

The Float Festival originates from the 17th century and is believed to have been started by King Thirumala Nayaka, according to Festival of India.

Madurai is known as the Temple Town of India and can be reached by air from Channai and Mumbai.Meet the editors...
