Almost a quarter of people in the UK could cut out travel insurance for their trips this year - potentially including that for holidays to India - in a bid to save money during the credit crunch.

Almost a quarter of people in the UK could cut out travel insurance for their trips this year - potentially including that for holidays to India - in a bid to save money during the credit crunch.

This was the discovery of a poll by American Express, in which 24 per cent of respondents said they would be willing to do this, despite the risks to their wallet and their health in the long run.

Indeed, Chris Rolland, head of American Express insurance services, said the top two causes for claims on travel insurance are for medical and cancellation reasons.

"It is worrying that 48 per cent of Brits are planning to cut back on the policies that are designed to protect them during hard times," he added.

Earlier this week, an article in the Irish Independent suggested that Britons should purchase single trip cover to save money if they are sure they will not be travelling again in the same year.
