A growing number of people in Britain are opting to book their summer breaks - including holidays to India - last-minute, rather than in advance.

Britons leaving holidays until last-minute

A growing number of people in Britain are opting to book their summer breaks - including holidays to India - last-minute, rather than in advance.

This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the independent travel research company BLM Horizon, which shows that 54 per cent of people will wait until at least April before booking their summer holiday, a 14 per cent increase on the number leaving it late last year.

The waiting was put down to the current economic conditions making people more cautious, as well as people looking for a bargain to make their money stretch further.

BLM Horizon's business director, Chris Armond, said: "Consumers are more reluctant to commit in advance to big purchases such as holidays, although they still intend to take a holiday."

However, travellers may want to be cautious of adopting this approach - in January, Frances Tuke of the Association of British Travel Agents warned that there will be fewer late deals on the market this year than there were in 2008.
