Goa carnival exceeded expectationsThousands of people took holidays to India this weekend in order to experience the legendary Goa Carnival.

Although much of the world is struggling with economic problems, tourists from all over the globe still headed to the Indian resort to take part in the revelry, which included a parade of floats down the streets of Panaji.

The event is traditionally observed just before Lent - prior to a period of austerity - and this year's carnival saw a tableaux depicting Goa's Portuguese links take pride of place in the parades.

Samba dancers also took to the streets to entertain both locals and tourists.

India's press association said: "The colours of the carnival enchanted the onlookers as the pageants and floats passed through the city's main thoroughfares."
