People who want to see tigers in the wild stand the best chance of doing so on holidays in India.

This is the advice of the Independent, which calls the south Asian country "the heartland of the tiger" thanks to its relatively large population in comparison with the rest of the world.

The Sunderbans in south Bengal have the biggest tiger population, but are densely vegetated, so seeing the beasts may be tricky, the newspaper attests.

Instead, the game parks of Madhya Pradesh may provide a better option and are managed with environmental protection for the creatures and other species in mind.

According to figures cited by the Wildlife Protection Society of India, the current tiger population stands between 1,165 and 1,657.

Tigers live in 17 states of the Republic of India and five states are believed to house more than 100 tigers each thanks to efforts by non-governmental organisations to protect them.Meet the editors...
