Gap year travellers urged to plan ahead

Anyone going on a gap year - including those on holidays to India - has been told that they should do their research and be well prepared if they want the trip to be a success.

Anyone going on a gap year - including those on holidays to India - has been told that they should do their research and be well prepared if they want the trip to be a success.

This advice comes from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which recently found that 41 per cent of such travellers do not always buy adequate insurance cover and 36 per cent have experienced running out of money.

The organisation said that being unprepared in such a way could prove costly, particularly if something unplanned crops up.

Meanwhile, 75 per cent of respondents to the FCO's survey said they do not research the customs and laws at their destination before they go.

"A little planning and research before you go can make a huge difference to the overall experience and creates a generation of more responsible travellers," said Ian French from the charity GapAid.

It was revealed earlier this week by the Department of Health that a worrying number of travellers have taken medicine over the counter while abroad, despite not understanding all of what it said on the packet.Meet the editors...
