Backpacking in India is magical and chaoticBackpacking holidays have been described as a magical, chaotic assault on the senses by one travel writer.

Jessica Russell, reporting for the South African, said that while the country is very busy and getting anywhere fast is nigh on impossible, nobody who goes there will forget its "vibrant soul".

"Its glorious chaos and startling contrasts will mesmerise you [and take] you on a magical, enriching escape," she enthused.

Ms Russell particularly recommended a visit to Varanasi on the edge of the Ganges, which is one of the world's oldest cities and is regarded as sacred by the Hindus.

She suggested taking a dawn boat ride down the river to see the different religious rituals going on as part of the Indians' everyday lives.

In what may also be important information for people going on holidays to India, the-backpacking-site.com recommends that travellers do not consume tap water or dairy products in order to avoid stomach upsets.
