Always inform insurers of medical problems, travellers urged

People going on holidays to India and Thailand among other destinations have been urged to tell their travel insurance provider about any pre-existing medical conditions.

Sam Marrs of Sainsbury's Travel Insurance said that by withholding such information, holidaymakers could risk voiding their policy, which means they would then not be covered in an emergency.

"In the worst of cases, this could mean facing large hospital bills or arranging your own repatriation," she pointed out, adding that honesty is the best policy when insurance providers request any information.

The comments come after the firm found that 1.3 million people travelled abroad in the last 12 months without telling their cover provider about a medical condition, with increased cost and fear of refusal cited as the main reasons.

An article in the Irish Independent recently suggested that single trip insurance is a good cost-cutting measure if the purchaser is sure they are not likely to go abroad again within 12 months.Meet the editors...
