Experience the sacred Buddha Purnima festival this MayHolidaymakers flying to India may want to make sure they experience the celebrations of the Buddha Purnima festival.

The event on May 8th celebrates three events in Buddha's life - including his birth, enlightenment and his attainment of Nirvana in death - all in one celebration.

Across India, the ways in which the event is observed varies from region to region, but according to WhatsOnWhen, they are all "awesome to be part of as a spectator or devotee".

People from all over the world come to the country for the event as pilgrims flock to the Buddhist sacred sites and temples.

It is said that Buddha preached for the first time in Sarnath, a town north of Varanasi, where celebrations involve colourful fairs.

Another site worth visiting according to the event website is Gagtok, where Buddhist monks file into the streets meditating from the scriptures.

This is the most sacred event in the Buddhist calendar and coincides with the full moon in May or June each year. Meet the editors...
