Holidaymakers flying to India may want to take advantage of a luxurious detox programme in a 19th century palace, a travel writer has said.

"Those who have been to India before will know that the roads are the quickest path to spiritual enlightenment," wrote Lisa Dwan for the Daily Mail.

Ms Dwan spent two weeks on an ayurvedic retreat in the town of Kalari Kovilakom in the mountains above the coast of Kerala.

"They call this region God's own country and you can see why," she said, describing the journey up to the mountain-top palace.

Upon arriving at the retreat, Ms Dwan was told by the ayurvedic physician that she was to let them look after her as if she were a baby during the detox programme of internal and external oleation, purgation and revitalisation, she added.

Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit for life and knowledge and is a form of holistic medicine that originated thousands of years ago in India. Meet the editors...
