Travellers with a need for speed booking a holiday to Australia in June may wish to head to Alice Springs for the Finke Desert Race, an events guide has suggested.

Some 600 "souped-up" motorbikes and "turbo-charged buggies" head out into the outback for a 500 km race across the red earth, reported WhatsOnWhen.

"This is not your typical Sunday morning drive, but it's all worth it to be crowned King of the Desert," wrote the site.

Following a bumpy circuit, that used to be the Ghan railway track, riders and drivers reach speeds of up to 170 km per hour in the "helter skelter race" taking place from June 5th to 8th.

Travellers can join in the fun or simply stand back and watch as "engine blow-ups, flips, rollovers and crashes are commonplace".

When participants reach the halfway point of Aputula in the desert, they set up camp along with spectators, before heading back to the starting point the following day.

According to Alice Springs Tourism, the location is the most romantic country town in the world.
