Travellers flying to Mumbai this summer may wish to head to Jodhpur to see the 'lost garden' of Sur Sagar painted almost 200 years ago.

London will be displaying an exhibition of paintings from the royal court at Jodhpur in the British Museum this summer, which have never before been shown in Europe, wrote Stanley Stewart for the Times.

He set off to Rajasthan in India to see the garden for himself, of which the paintings date from the reign of the maharajah Man Singh - who ruled the largest of the old Rajasthan states, Marwar, for the majority of the first half of the 19th century.

"They are an astonishing collection of sensuous landscapes, shimmering court scenes and strange religious works," said Mr Stewart.

He went to the "fort of the sun" - Mehrangarh - which he described as maybe the greatest palace and fort in Rajasthan and which "looms over the blue houses of Jodhpur like a vast stone galleon".

According to Rajasthan Tourism, the region is home to several eco-tourism sites and endangered species such as the tiger call the area home. Meet the editors...
