Experience an "impressively noisy" festival on holiday in India

Travellers taking a holiday in India or visiting for business during September may want to head to the Pampa River for an "impressively noisy" festival.

On the last day of the Onam Festival, the river becomes home to the annual Aranmula Boat Race.

Snake boats, which are some 100-feet-long, line up in the water near the Pathasarathy Temple in preparation for the event.

Each boat contains 100 oarsmen, four helmsmen and more unusually, 25 singers.

"They move in pairs to the rhythm of full-throated singing and shouting and the crowds are not afraid to lend their voices," explained events website WhatsOnWhen.

However, events during the festivities are not confined to the water as entertainment is provided throughout the town.

Situated near Patanamthitta, Aranmula is a small town famous for the traditional Kerala lifestyle and it is a well-known "backwater destination".

According to Tourism of India, August is also a good month to take a holiday in the Indian destination due to cool winds. Meet the editors...
