The Economic Times of India held its inaugural travel awards ceremony in Dubai recently, the outcome of which may inspire the decisions of people taking cheap holidays in India.

Economic Times of India hosts first travel awards show Those booking cheap flights to India and cities such as Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore may like to take heed of the results of the first-ever Economic Times of India travel awards.

Held in association with Samsonite and the Travel Agents' Association of India, the ceremony saw 17 accolades bestowed on companies in the industry - including best state tourism board - which went to Goa.

Yatra.com bagged the award for India's top-rated online travel site, while Gateway Hotels was deemed to be the country's top budget accommodation chain and The Oberoi Mumbai topped the business/luxury hotel category.

Goa's Majorda Beach Resort walked away with the top leisure resort and spa gong, and best heritage property went to the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai.

Last month, the 2009 global Expedia Insiders' Select list, which is now in its third year, saw the Oberoi Grand in Kolkata score top among the accommodation options in India.
