Advice on Taj Mahal alternatives offered for holidays to IndiaTourists booking flights to India may be planning to visit one of the country's most iconic landmarks, the Taj Mahal.

Writing in the Guardian, Tom Hall from Lonely Planet offers some advice to tourists who may struggle to see the Taj Mahal during their trip.

Responding to a letter from a woman visiting Agra on a Friday - the only day that the monument is closed to the public - Mr Hall suggested taking in Agra Fort and Akbar's Mausoleum.

The Agra Fort is located near the gardens of the Taj Mahal and is a designated Unesco World Heritage Site.

Constructed using red sandstone, the fortress comprises several palaces, audience halls and two mosques.

Akbar's Mausoleum is located approximately 10 kilometres outside the city and is a striking architectural example of a collaboration of Hindu and Moslem design.

The complex is distinguished by its large gateway that features four marble minarets.
